AKA: My Mother In Laws Recipe for Dry Garlic Ribs
These are SO yummy and I get so tired of making the same thing over and over for dinner...so here's tonight's dinner and I thought I'd share. My mother in law made these for me once and I fell in love. Yum!!!
(PS: Porkchops were on sale yesterday at SuperStore so that's our meat of choice)
Dry Garlic Ribs
6-8 boneless porkchops --> cubed
1/4 cup Flour/cornstarch
Oil for frying
Marinade:
2 T soy sauce (yes, I eat this once in a while :D)
2 T brown sugar
Garlic powder to taste
Pepper to taste
Mix marinade in a bag. Add pork cubes. Let sit 30 minutes to all day in the fridge (ours are in right now for later).
Dip pork pieces in flour after marinating all day. You can use flour/cornstarch mixed or just flour - or you could even try Shake N' Bake if you wanted.
Brown pieces in hot oil for 10 minutes.
Bake browned meat for 35 to 45 minutes at 350 on a cookie sheet. Add salt pepper garlic.
Dips well in ranch dressing.
Enjoy. We're just having rice and peas with it. Yum :)

Girls Only Post
This is it. The post (some of) you have been waiting for. The one and only product review.
If you know what I'm talking about, keep reading. If you don't, well either you don't click on links on my blog, or you don't keep up to date, or whatever it might be. In any case, you should note this post is not for the boys. No really. This topic was discussed in front of a guy who can take just about anything that is TMI. But not this - he had to leave and got all weirded out. So if you're a guy. Stop it. Not kidding. Consider yourself warned.
This might be one for extra squeamish girls to quit reading too. But maybe you'll just skim through.
So what is it?
It's a review on this...The Diva Cup (you might wanna take a quick boo at the website to see just what the heck I'm getting into here).
First you need to learn my whys - why a Diva Cup? Why now? Why not just a tampon? Here's a quick run down on some of my thoughts lately (in as brief as someone with verbal diarrhea can possibly make it):
- I have endometriosis (duh). The cause of endometriosis is unknown. One theory is retrograde menstruation as discovered by John A. Sampson. Closely related to that is the fact that we've shoved tampons up there (perhaps causing retrograde menstruation or something similar). That's a loose theory, but hey. Worth thinking about.
- Tampons (depending on brand and type) contain the following ingredients: bleached rayon, aluminum, alcohol, and additives. Firstly, rayon is a man-made fiber. There are also other ingredients not approved by the FDA in things like lotions and drugs, and yet not regulated in tampons...that you stick inside of you for hours...that are being absorbed by your body. Awesome.
- These ingredients (above) cause dioxins. Dioxin is poison on any level, though tampon manufacturers claim different. Toxic shock syndrome is caused 50% of the time by tampon-use as it encourages a breeding ground for Staph aureus.
- Yes, there are other studies saying that studies with tampons and endo are inconclusive. However, logically those studies don't make sense and 2 that I could find had been run by tampon companies themselves. Can you say conflict of interest?
- There is some thought that tampons actually make your periods heavier (not good for those with endo), though I haven't done much research...it seems it draws out extra blood and chunks.
- Our world is obsessed with "eating right", living organically, cleaning with products, etc., etc. And yet without second thought use tampons and even chemically-covered pads on a monthly basis. Hmmm.
You should also note that I don't think tampons are 100% bad and I acknowledge that there are organic (expensive) alternatives. I don't think pads are as bad as tampons, but ugh. I hate wearing pads...and have never, ever, and never, ever will. Gross. But that's just me.
So the alternative? I found this Diva Cup. Someone mentioned it a couple years ago to me and it's been on my mind ever since. So after some prompting from online articles, I dove in and bought one. Honestly, I've never been so excited to get my period. For all your questions, look on their website FAQ; they honestly answer every question I was going to address on there including manufacturing issues, FDA issues, endo, and beyond. Seriously. My thoughts?
- I was shocked at how big it was, honestly, when I got it. But I simply followed the directions in their cute little book and popped it in. It didn't hurt. It didn't pinch. It didn't feel funny. In fact, I feel it less than I felt a tampon. I was always aware of tampons (and I've used those since I was 12) and hated how near the end of your period, they always felt dry and ucky...but I hated pads too much to use those at the end. It seriously just popped in and I didn't feel it at all. When it's in it kinda pops open and there ya go. Done and done.
- I emptied more often the first couple days simply because I was curious. I'm a heavy kinda girl and didn't have any leakage whatsoever. Not once. I do note I'll have to empty it more than every 12 hours in the first few days because I am heavy. But it was great overnight (no leakage) and no worries.
- Pulling it out took a bit of practice. Depending how you sit it'll be higher or lower...so you kinda have to be in touch with yourself. This might gross some people out because it's more touchy feely than a tampon. Doesn't bother me even slightly, but younger women or not so in touch women might not like this part. However, as I discovered by the end, using your kegel muscles help a LOT. You can kinda push it down more to grasp and pull. You need to do it over the toilet most definitely.
- If you're particularly squeamish about blood, this is not for you. There's a lot of blood and you dump it in the toilet. Didn't gross me out (and in fact I think it's neat - okay TMI?) and I think it's a good way to monitor the amount of blood loss every day. I am definitely heavier than the average girl. Way heavier. Good to know.
- And random - I was one of those girls who simply can't pee with a tampon in. It irritates me - I know you "can", but I just couldn't. It felt like it readjusted every time and it bothered me. So not the case with the Diva Cup. I sometimes had to lean forward to empty all the way, but that's fairly normal with me anyways.
Oh, and as for cost - it was $40 and I ordered online - with shipping, the wash, and the cup. To my door. You can get it in stores, but I wanted it right that second now and knew I wouldn't get out before it came. I was right. It's good for at least a year. Much savings involved.
Questions? Feel free to ask (even anonymously, I don't care).
And that, my friends, is your TMI-overload for the day.

Day Surprise: Your Favourite Synchro Program
I took it upon myself to add Synchro in as a discipline in figure skating (imagine that!). I've included it as a part of the 30 Days of Figure Skating Challenge. Simply because I want to. And I'm obsessed with ALL disciplines of skating, especially synchro. Plus it's so much more unknown - perhaps highlighting the best of the best will lead someone to find joy in it *grins*.
History Lesson:
Unlike the other disciplines, synchro has a relatively short history in some ways. Before it was known as the sport it is today, it was called precision. It dates far back into the 70s or earlier and credit is given to Dr. Richard Porter as the founder. The first "international" (USA and Canada) competition was held in 1976. It became known as synchronized skating in the late 90s and the first official World Championships were held in Minneapolis in 2000.
The Contenders:
Because of the short history, the contender list is actually quite small and I didn't even have to look much up...I'm that obsessed:
Really the other countries are still developing this sport and nothing stunning has revealed itself yet - though Germany, Russia, and Japan are the next major contenders. I have also only included Senior Teams, as I did for the other disciplines.
Honorable Mention: Goldenettes - Swan Lake - 1990. Pretty sure it's the coolest thing to get that many people THAT in synch. It makes me smile every time :)
The Top 5:
(Note: I have not included this year's performances yet - I want to watch Worlds (first weekend in April) before I pass judgment on those programs to include them forever on my list :D)
5. NEXXICE - Edward Scissorhands - Worlds 2007. This clip is from Winterfest and it was rougher and not the clip I wanted, but couldn't find the one from Worlds. I LOVED this program. I think this is what made me fall in love with synchro all over again.
4. Team Surprise - Bonnie Tyler Tribute - Worlds 2007. Shocking right? I don't know why, but I loved this program. It's not perfect, beautiful, or as great in terms of the little things, but overall I love it. And sometimes a good toe tapper is all it takes in synchro :D
3. black ice - Twinkle, Twinkle - Nationals 2010 - This legitimately still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. Brilliant.
2. Team Surprise - Que Sera Sera - Worlds 2007 - This was, at the time, the absolute most stunning program I've ever seen. I'll have to admit that I don't like some of the required elements from 2007 and that is probably stopping me from putting it first. However, the unison and ease of completion of this entire program - stunning.
And the winner (thus far) of the best program ever?

- Marigold IceUnity (Finland) - 3-time World Champions (plus 2 World Silver and 2 World Bronze).
- Team Surprise (Sweden) - 5-time World Champions (in top 3 since start of World Championships, except last year when they finished 6th).
- Rockettes (Finland) - 2-time World Champions (plus 2 bronze and 2 silver).
- Team Unique (Finland) - World Silver Medalists
- Haydenettes (USA) - World Bronze Medalists and 10-time American Champions
- Miami University (USA) - World Silver Medalists and 3-time American Champions

1. NEXXICE - Carmina Burana - Worlds 2009. Also goosebump-causing. Still. Every freaking single time (even on the Jumbotron at Nationals nearly on repeat). This is perfection. And yes, I acknowledge some Canadian bias in this - however, I truly have more personal bias toward the North American style of skating (edges, deep powerful crosscuts, subtle strength) versus the European (fast and strong). (And yes, I think that their long program at Worlds, if skated clean, will overtake this position!!).

Pancakes
Aren't they neat? I'm still learning and want to make more in the future. I was inspired by The Muffin Tin Mom who always has great ideas for food, crafts, etc. Perhaps I'll be brave and try colours next time too.

Day 8: Your Favourite Ladies Program
You know how it goes. No exhibitions. No previous repeats of programs (already or to come). The list of (my) contenders:
There is one performance I am purposely leaving off as to me it qualifies for another post in this series and I promised no re-posts. If you know me well, you'll know the performance ;)
Honorable Mention: Karen Magnussen - Worlds - 1973 - Perhaps this is Canadian bias. Okay. Fine. It is. But there was something special about Karen and I am still in awe of her when I see her around the rink coaching at competitions. I even got her autograph when I was 17 :) She was the last Canadian woman to win a World Championship and that was in the days of Janet Lynn even!!
The Top 5:
5. Michelle Kwan - Tosca - 2004 -If you know me, you know that I'm not a fan of Michelle. However, even I can acknowledge the passion, power, and emotion behind this performance.
4. Sasha Cohen - Dark Eyes - 2006 - Sigh. I just can't believe this girl never reached her potential. Her jumps when they were on were perfect, plus she had flexibility, power, and baby ballerina...all in one. This program was stunning and for sure had me thinking she'd be Olympic champion (alas her freeskate wasn't as hot).
3. Irina Slutskaya - Wonderland - 2005 - Rewatching this program I acknowledge there are simple messy errors and her spins were definitely not perfect. She did an extra loop that ended up with no points, but I remember watching this program then and even now and the joy that she is skating with emanates. Skaters simply don't skate like that anymore - to me watching someone skate with joy is better, perhaps, than watching perfection. And this story, this skate - that's joy.
2. Yuna Kim - Gershwin Concerto - 2010 - Okay. I'm not one to go gaga over Yuna. Especially in light of her recent (negative) media attention. I don't think she's the greatest thing ever and I don't bow to her presence. But this program was magical and yes, I'd say perfection.
And the winner is...
1. Joannie Rochette - Concierto de Aranjuez - 2009 Nationals. Okay. Like you didn't see this one coming. I know I'm obsessed, but how can I not be? Her subtle choreography is what gets me. The ability to move in time with the nuancing of the music, while maintaining textbook completion of her jumps. She has never gotten a jump downgrade on a clean triple (ie: many skaters land "clean" but in fact are short rotation and complete on the ice). She has never gotten an edge call on a lutz (aka: flutz). This program gives me chills. She was 2nd going in at Nationals (to Cynthia) and that was shocking. She let it all go and just wow. Wow.
- Michelle Kwan - 5 time World Champion, 9 time American Champion, and Olympic Bronze and Silver Medalist.
- Tara Lipinski - Olympic, World, and American Champion.
- Joannie Rochette - Olympic Bronze Medalist, World Silver Medalist, and 6 time Canadian Champion.
- Yuna Kim - Olympic and World Champion (Top Koreans do not compete in their National Championships at this point - Kim only competed as a Senior (and won 5 times) while she was Junior age-eligible.
- Peggy Flemming - Olympic Champion, 3 time World Champion, and 5 time American Champion.
- Liz Manley - Olympic Silver Medalist, World Silver Medalist, and 3 time Canadian Champion.
- Karen Magnussen - Olympic Silver Medalist, World Champion (last Canadian woman to do so), and 5 time Canadian Champion.
- Lu Chen - 2 time Olympic Bronze Medalist, World Champion, and 9 time Chinese Champion.
- Irina Slutskaya - Olympic Bronze and Silver Medalist, 2 time World Champion, and 4 time Russian Champion.
- Kristi Yamiguchi - Olympic Champion, 2 time World Champion, and American Champion. Also 2 time American Pairs Champion (with Rudy Galindo).
- Katarina Witt - 2 time Olympic Champion, 4 time World Champion, and 8 time East German Champion.
- Oksana Baiul - Olympic, World, and 2 time Ukrainian Champion.
- Nancy Kerrigan - Olympic Bronze and Silver Medalist, World Silver Medalist, and American Champion.
- Josee Chouinard - 3 time Canadian Champion and Canada's biggest disappointment internationally :)
- Sasha Cohen - Olympic Silver Medalist, 2 time World Silver Medalist, and American Champion.

Mostly for Me...But I'll Let You Read It...
Probably because this might be the only blog post happening right now, you get the joy of reading my to do list this week. Or you cannot read it. I don't really blog for you - did you know that? :) It's all about me on here and since I need to get these things off my mind (or I won't sleep), here's my place of choice.
And if you care then you'll feel involved in my life.
And if you don't, stop reading.
And if you really care, please feel free to stop over and help :D
Things to Do This Week:

Edited March 24 to cross out things that are done and add notes in red :)
And if you care then you'll feel involved in my life.
And if you don't, stop reading.
And if you really care, please feel free to stop over and help :D
Things to Do This Week:
Go to Costco - Monday (need dishwasher and clothes soaps mostly).Get new washing machine and dryer installed - Tuesday. Yes I caved. This may have its own post just because I'm excited. Something to do with being old.Catch up on laundry andput it all away (latter part being key) - I'll be real excited to do laundry on Tuesday due to above note.- Get ahead of the work game so I can perhaps take an extra day off (blog post to follow soon on the new job situation - I swear).
- Spring cleaning. No really. My house is driving me mad and if I don't go nuts cleaning, I may well go nuts mentally. Not that it's a far journey...Started doing this - completely gutted Lexy's room, brought stuff down to storage...next up? Main room (in progress) and bedroom.
Tidy up and mail in my Evaluator's Promotion. It has to get done so I can have this for Spring.Have to burn to disc and mail.- Find, print, and organize tax stuff - found someone to DO my taxes - now I just have to organize it to my own standards before meeting with him. It's mostly together, but there needs to be a few more things brought together (the joys of self-employment, right?). Technically he's not doing this till after March 30th, so it can be done on the weekend if need be.
- Dr. Williams followup visit - Friday afternoon.
- Find someone to cut my mess of hair - I bought thickening shampoo and it's working - but the ends are sick and straggly. I wish I could grow my hair out. Sigh. End tangent. Person found. Next week perhaps appointment.
Gymnastics - Wednesday. Possibly also a Zoo trip Wednesday if it's nice out - totally bailed on it today because of the length of the lineup when I drove by - they really need a totally separate (efficient) line for season pass holders.Didn't go to the Zoo due to a family conflict.- Make Alexys' 2-year-old appoint for the doctor (yes, I realize she's 2 and 3 months). There was method to madness and I'm good with it now.
- Include myself in aforementioned appointment. Short story (yes, tangent): I've been fighting a sore throat for 3 weeks. Thursday I officially had it - sick with a sore throat. Friday was eh. Saturday eh. Then early this morning I woke up and swallowed really hard and it felt like my sore throat dropped into my chest. Like instantly. Seriously. I now have a bit of a sore throat (but less than yesterday), but I developed a cough and a lump in my chest. Seriously. It feels like I have something stuck in my throat and I just can't get it out. I think it may be a chest infection.
- Make the cookies I tried to make all weekend. Seriously.
Post a blog about the way cool pancakes I made.- Sleep.

In My Mind
Perhaps some of these thoughts will lead to longer posts. Perhaps my mind will stop going 1000 miles an hour if I share them. I'm hoping for both options, though it may very well only be the latter.
But I need to shower.
kortney elise xoxo
- I competed again on the weekend. No video, but I won. And I beat my own score by 3 points. Now I'm retired from competition. At least for now ;)
- I completed the last of my Evaluators Trialing for judging. I just have to sort it out this week and send it off to hopefully get another promotion in time for spring test days.
- Skating season is over (for me) until May Long weekend. I'm going to have to carefully balance, or rather see if I can balance, a Novice Dance/Pairs clinic, while completing my Novice Singles promotion. I fear it will not be possible and in turn I will choose to complete my Novice Singles.
- Worlds for skating has been postponed according to the ISU President, Ottavio Cinquanta. He should be taken out - he stated this week pretty much that he doesn't care what skaters think, because they're minors (actually only a handful of them are). Also, he clearly operates only for money and bows to the JSF. Who also need a wakeup call.
- Speaking of Japan, wow. Just wow. Unbelievable - this does need its own post to process my thoughts.
- I bought one of these and have a whole post coming on the joys of womanhood.
- Alexys is now registered for 2 preschools - one is a Parks and Rec program and the other is Wind and Tide. Owen is in her Parks and Rec class. Wind and Tide is hard to get into. I'm torn.
- Alexys drops the F-bomb on a regular basis. I have no idea what she is trying to say. It's very clear though. And it is not duck or truck - she says those well already.
- Alexys has been in gymnastics on a weekly basis since February...and it's really helping her listening skills. Even the teacher commented last class on how much she's improved - she's mostly staying with the group now and doing some of the stuff she's supposed to do. She's real talented at jumping on the trampoline.
- Speaking of Alexys, her vocab is improving pretty quick. Still undecided if I need to take her to speech therapy.
- Potty training is not happening - think it ties in with the vocab thing partly. She's also not physically ready yet. Going to wait a few months before trying again. It was a disaster of epic proportions when we tried.
- I'm getting brand new (not just to me) washer and dryer hopefully in the next few days. The free one we got from a friend is actually against strata - the dryer has to be hung on the wall so it no worky. I'm listing it on Freecycle - anyone need a washer dryer? Maybe 15 years old...work just fine. Dryer must be hung on wall.
- Jordon started a new job. So did I. More on this later too :)
But I need to shower.

Day 7: Favourite Men's Program
I'm a billion years late on this one. But A) It was a hard one and B) I was busy...but without further ado:
Alright. Ground rules - I ruled out exhibition programs. That just makes it harder.
This is the hardest category yet. I truly really don't know. I could probably list a top ten easier than a top five...but I promised myself only five choices.
I'm really sorry to all the beautiful male program's I'm about to leave out. Truly. I went with program's that I remember right now, off the top of my head. Because if I dig too hard, I know I'll have too many. While I am a freak and spend lots of time watching old programs, this means I'm leaving out the oldie but the goodies. Kind of. Like. I know there were programs that were great, but I can't remember them off the top of my head...so they need to get skipped. For my own sanity...and the length of this post.
The Contenders:
And now....to narrow it down to the top five programs. Ever. And pick a winner. I really don't know if I can do this. And Scotty is missing - but none of his programs jumped off the top of my head...even though I know they're there. And Elvis? Well, he was my favourite skater of the 90s - but watching him now, ugh. Yeah he could jump, but he really, really couldn't spin. And well - it just isn't anything to write home about. I think I liked him because he could jump. And because he was the Canadian...and the underdog.
5. Todd Eldredge - 1492 - I know, I know what you're thinking. However, in my opinion Todd was screwed by the year he was born in. Todd SCREAMS New System Skater loud and clear. He was underrated in a world of Plushenkos and Stojkos where the focus was on quads. The use of subtle nuancing in this program gives me goosebumps. Every freaking time.
4. Alexei Yagudin - Winter - I debated back and forth between this one and Man in the Iron Mask. But Winter won. At the time, especially, it was magical and I really thought it was something else.
3. Brian Boitano - Olympics - I wanted to pick Brian Orser. I truly did. But I couldn't because there was just something about this program that was so Olympics, so perfect - so...I don't know - magical? It has to be included. It simply has to.
2. Kurt Browning - Casablanca (starts at 2:25) - It was hard to choose just one Kurt program to include because Kurt is well, Kurt. And there was something about this program that I couldn't resist. Then or now.
And the winner of my Favourite Men's Program of all time...
1. Patrick Chan - Phantom of the Opera 2011 - This goes against what I believe. Absolutely it does. Patrick is too young, too new to have this title. And yet - and yet I can't NOT give it to him. This program is brilliant. Pure brilliance. Dare I say - if Patrick had skated this very program done like this with these jumps at the Olympics, he would have been Olympic Champion. Hands down, no question. And if he skates this as well at Worlds this year, he will be World Champion. How can someone absolutely hit every program component like he does AND include a +3 quad/triple and a quad combination after. If you haven't seen this program, well, it's your loss. There was no inflation of PCS or GOE in this program. It's utter brilliance.
Alright. Ground rules - I ruled out exhibition programs. That just makes it harder.

- Patrick Chan - 4 time Canadian Champion, 2 time World Silver medalist.

- Kurt Browning - 4 time Canadian Champion and 4 time World Champion.
- Jeff Buttle - 3 time Canadian Champion, World Champion, and Olympic Bronze medalist.
- Rudy Galindo - American Champion and World Bronze medalist (and 2 time pairs American Champion!).
- Toller Cranston - 6 time Canadian Champion, World Bronze medalist, and Olympic Bronze medalist.

Live Stream: My Mind
- Canada's female skating is abysmal. Jr Worlds - 1 didn't qualify out of prelims and 1 didn't make the long program. We are down to 1 spot for Jr Worlds next year. How proud I am.
- Our men on the other hand...
- I've recently developed anxiety attacks I think. I start thinking about things that need to get done and the organization I want and I start to freak the heck out. Like full on tightness in my chest and breathing issues. My way to deal thus far is a shower.
- I need to eat healthier and start living a healthier lifestyle. I hate who I am becoming. Hate. See above point. I need to have physical activity more involved in my life. Pleas note I HATE running, the gym, yoga, stretching...anything but dancing and skating. I know something has to change, but ugh. That's why I'm fat. And I eat crap. Not even terrible crap. I just snack. I have a really high hunger status all the time. And a metabolism that doesn't match.
- There are lots of changes going in our house (no, I'm not pregnant). I can't go into much more detail than that right yet, but soon I will. I see good things happening in life for our family. Sometimes the grass really is greener on the other side.
- Skating season dies down in approximately 2 weeks. I can't figure out if I'm happy or sad.
- Potty training will coincide with the ending of skating season. 2 weeks will be our first attempt.

I'll Probably Regret This...
But since I had a blast doing it (and even if I don't LOOK like Joannie Rochette, I felt like it :D) and it was just what I needed to focus on right now in life, I'll post it. I came second at the Adult Competition in Silver Interpretive. Which was much better than my goal of 'not last.' And I also hit PCs in the 2s (ha - I don't think I would have hit 2s as a judge!!!)...which was my other goal. Score.
Keep in mind, I totally judge myself while doing this program and it was a big deal for me to get out there alone - it's been 9 years since I've been on an ice surface alone in a competition setting.
Also keep in mind that in my head I'm such a better skater than I am. It reminds me why I retired to watch this, phew.
I'll compete this one more time at Spring Fling (in the Adult event) and then it can be laid to rest. This was just enough to get the competitive bug out of me and I can go back to doing what I'm truly enjoying - judging :D I think I'll focus on trying to learn and test Gold Skills this spring/summer...because breathing, performing, and focusing on edges in one program is just too much for this girl's brain :)
